Walmart is Being Sued for Selling Fake Beer

It was announced last month that Walmart was a part of a class-action lawsuit. When you read these words, our first inclination was that it was for something serious. However, upon further inspection, the reason was…well, totally Walmart.

According to the official class-action document, Walmart was selling craft beers that were not actually craft at all. They were all created in a wholesale manner! In the report, it states that multiple Walmart brews have “false representation that the Craft beer is in fact a ‘craft beer’ when, in actuality, nothing about [Walmart] is ‘small, traditional and independent.”

Oh snap!

As we are sure most of you know, Walmart is a billion dollar industry. In 2015, the company had a market value of approximately $250 billion. The beer who makes the company, Trouble Brewing shares the same address of another brewing company called Genesee Brewery. This company is known for their mass-production of products and is a popular college brew choice.

Walmart stated that they did not mean to mislead customers on their packaging. Teresa Budd, who is a member of the company’s adult beverage section, told the Washington Post that “We were intentional about designing a package that conveyed a look and feel you’d expect of craft beer.”

The lawsuit basically is questioning their definition of a craft beer. Craft beers are generally supposed to be created in a small brewery in a traditional way. The director of media relations at Walmart, Ragan Dickens told Thrillist that “We hold out suppliers to high standards and are committed to providing out customers the quality products they expect. While we have not year been served with the complaint, we take this matter seriously and intend to defend ourselves against the allegations.”

No word yet on how they will resolve this issue.
