Free Autism Screening for Young Children

---The Children’s Hospital of Southwest Florida, in partnership with the Ronald McDonald House Charities® of Southwest Florida, offers a free monthly autism spectrum disorder screening for toddlers 18 months to five years of age.

The next screening will be held Feb. 24 from 9:30 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the Wellness Center of Cape Coral,

609 SE 13th Court

The ASD screening is conducted by the
Neurosciences Center at The Children’s Hospital, under the guidance of pediatric neurologist Jose Colon, MD, MPH. The screenings are administered by an Advanced Registered Nurse Practitioner, who has extensive training and experience in typical child development and developmental disorders.

“Tickets Now Available for Museum’s

2012 USO-Inspired “Hollywood Canteen” Gala

Evoking the golden days of Hollywood when the stars entertained the troops in clubs called canteens, the 4thannual 2012 USO-Inspired “Hollywood Canteen” Gala takes guests back in time to the 1940s with this unique event supporting the Southwest Florida Museum of History.

On January 28th, 2012 at 6 pm, the Southwest Florida Museum of History Foundation hosts its annual signature fundraising event, and this year, the Gala returns to historic Page Field at the new Paragon Flight School Hangar! Guests will be treated to an evening of food, dancing, and entertainment in the tradition of USO hangar dances.

TheHollywood Canteen saw many stars, some who served in the military and others who simply ‘served’ the troops, as it welcomed service men and women for some food and entertainment with music and lots of dancing. It was film star Bette Davis who, with a huge cadre of volunteers, created the canteen or ‘club’ for service personnel during World War II.

In addition to a new theme, this USO-style dance and dinner features a new band, Sarasota Gold, and promises to be an event to remember complete with live music, a delicious dinner, World War II memorabilia, vintage aircraft, auctions filled with outstanding items, a VIP area, and more! Costumes are encouraged for this spectacular evening including military uniforms, and 1940s period fashions.

Tickets are just $50 and tables of 8 (buy 7 seats get 1 free!) are available for purchase by groups. Proceeds benefit the Foundation which supports education programs and exhibits at the SWFL Museum of History.  Reservations are required by calling 239-321-7430 or tickets can be purchased online at www.swflmuseumofhistory.com. You can also stay up to date when you ‘like’ our SWFL Museum of History and Foundation facebook pages.

Saturday, Jan. 28 from 9 a.m. to 12 p.m. at Kohl’s 19600 Cochran Boulevard,
Port Charlotte.

Research shows that an estimated 30 percent of children still continue to ride unrestrained and 80 percent of all car seats are used incorrectly.  More than 1,700 children have been saved since 1996 just because they were riding in a properly fitted car seat and in the back seat.

Education and information to improve these numbers is of critical need in our community.  According to Safe Kids and the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, a correctly used safety seat reduces fatality risk by 71 percent and serious injury risk by 67 percent.

Car seats will be available at a reduced price if your car seat is part of a recall, out dated or not the appropriate car seat for the child.

Bilingual fitting technicians will be available. Appointments are strongly encouraged and may be made by calling 239-343-5224 for a time that’s convenient for you.

CANDLELIGHT VIGIL FOR HOMELESS TO BE HELD AT SMH WEDNESDAY, DECEMBER 21ST AT 6PM

St. Matthew’s House will be holding its annual Candlelight Vigil this Wednesday, December 21st, 2011 at 6pm in its courtyard at 2001 Airport Road, South in Naples, in honor of Homeless Persons’ Memorial Day. Since 1990, the event is held each year on the first day of winter, also the longest night of the year, to bring attention to the tragedy of homelessness. On this evening, we pause to remember our friends that have died on our streets, in our emergency housing facilities, and in condemned or abandoned properties, from ailments or conditions directly related to homelessness.. We will also honor two longtime board members, Phillip Westley and Dean Lind, who passed on in 2011. As part of an effort by the National Coalition for the Homeless, the Candlelight Vigil is a time of fellowship and prayer, as similar events will be happening throughout the country. For more information, please contact SMH Communications and Event Officer Julie Clayat 239-774-0500.

Annual Wildlife and Wildlands Art Show

Presented by The Friends of Delnor-Wiggins Pass State Park

(December 5, 2011 - NAPLES, FL)The 14th annual Wildlife and Wildlands Art Show will be held on Saturday, January 14, 2012. The show will be located in area three of Delnor-Wiggins Pass State Park in north Collier County and will run from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. for locals and vacationers to enjoy.

The art show will feature 20 artists -- painters in oils and watercolors, photographers, and artists who use natural materials. Attendees will be able to meet the artists as they walk through the maritime hammock picnic area along the beach. This event showcases the natural and cultural resources of Florida through artistic expression.

The Friends of Delnor-Wiggins Pass State Park are presenting the annual art show and are extremely thankful to Erv Krause, 2011resident artist. Artists like Krause capture the beauty of the park and preserve it for the generations to come.

Krause is a wildlife photographer and his fascination with nature and its secrets has been with him his entire life.  He earned his Masters at the University of Illinois and embarked upon a teaching career that lasted 32 years. In his twenties, Krause began exploring nature with his camera and now has an ever expanding portfolio of wildlife images.

Painter William North was the first resident artist in 2007. Sadly, Mr. North passed away in October of this year but his legacy continues as each year a new resident artist is named. North’s favorite subjects were landscapes and seascapes painted in oils with an impressionistic style. He often recorded scenes not only from Delnor-Wiggins Pass State Park, but also Sanibel and Captiva Islands, and other historical landmarks in Southwest Florida.

The Friends of Delnor-Wiggins Pass State Park is funded solely by public contributions and does not receive federal grants. Your support as a partner in any event helps to ensure proceeds raised go to positive upgrades and improvements to Collier County’s treasured beachfront park.

Delnor-Wiggins Pass State Park is located at 11135 Gulf Shore Drive in Naples. For more information about becoming a Friend of Delnor-Wiggins Pass State Park, please visit www.DelnorWiggins.org or contact Jo Ann at (239) 398-7687.

Book Launch for Author Joni Raycroft  ·  Thursday, Dec. 15, 2011, 5:00-6:30 p.m.  ·  Avow Hospice

(Naples, FL) – New author, Joni Raycroft, launches her book “I Love You More Than I Love The Yankees” with a book signing on Thursday, Dec. 15,  from 5 p.m. to 6:30 p.m. in Naples, Fla. at Avow Treasures located at 3601 Tamiami Tr. N.  The book shares notes from Raycroft’s husband that he wrote to her following his 1995 diagnosis with terminal, testicular cancer.

The author will be donating $5 to Avow Hospice for each book sold at the book launch.  The launch event includes live entertainment and the opportunity to support the Avow Hospice cause.  Raycroft is supporting Avow Hospice because of its continued dedication to quality care for families in need at their darkest hour.

The book offers a unique look into one husband’s thoughts, fears and promises to his wife, author Joni Raycroft, during his long struggle with testicular cancer.  Ray Raycroft’s notes, written primarily on paper towels, expressed love for life, laughter and ultimately his fear of what eventually came, his death on Christmas morning in 1996.

Rev-Press felt Mrs. Raycroft’s passion to share her husband’s inner most thoughts and feelings during this terrible period of struggle in the couple’s life would act as a beacon of guiding light for readers to share with their loved ones.  The emotion is raw and unedited and offers a unique look at the lasting impressions we leave with loved ones,” said Chad Lilly, Revolution Press.

At the end of the 36 pages, the author invites readers to write their own personal notes to loved ones and then share the book as a gift with the goal of opening people up to sharing with one another.

Joni Raycroft

A native of Connecticut, Joni Raycroft is a mother of 2 sons, and a grandmother to 3.  After moving to Florida in 2004, she settled in Naples, and is the Purchasing Manager for Inovo, Inc.  Joni Raycroft is a dynamically creative individual with a mission to share the gift of giving and life with others through her writing.  Her first book “I Love You More Than I Love The Yankees” shares a few of her husband’s 100 notes he wrote to her during his struggle with testicular cancer before he passed in 1996.  Raycroft is already working on a sequel.

To our friends, members and extended family,

This year the SOUTHWEST CHAPTER of ABATE OF FLORIDA, INC. has chosen the Douglas T. Jacobson State Veterans Home in Port Charlotte for their ride on December 18, 2011. As Chapter President, I speak on behalf of our Chapter and its members. We would like this to be an unforgettable experience for everyone. The Veterans Home has 120 Veterans at this facility, 111 men and 9 women. We are looking for donations to help supply them with the items they have requested to include Wal-Mart gift cards, junk food, Old Spice and Brut aftershave, toiletries and socks. Please help us make this an unforgettable experience.

The Veterans Home has offered tours of the facility for anyone who wishes to.

We have asked all motorcycle groups from Naples to Sarasota such as the Ft Myers Hog Chapter, the Leathernecks, Special Forces, Defenders, Enforcers,Shriners, all ABATE Chapters etc. to participate. This is an open run for all and all we ask is that you come and ride with us and if so desired, please bring a small “gift” or donation.

One special request, if you can fly an American Flag, P.O.W. flag or any Military flag on your bike or cage, please do so.

In years past the Southwest Chapter has been very successful in rider participation. Let’s make this a great year for our Vets. Many have no family and just the thought of someone thinking of them is the greatest gift of all. Our Vets will never be forgotten.

In closing, I urge everyone of you to participate, invite your friends, family and co-workers to join in with us on December 18th. See the attached flyer and forward it on to someone else for us.

Donations to ABATE Southwest Chapter for this event will be greatly appreciated. Doreen Burns and Kelley Smith are making 12 x 17” pillows for every Vet and we have some grade school classes making Christmas cards for them as well.

It is estimated that one in every 150 children is diagnosed with some form of Autism Spectrum Disorder, making it more common than childhood cancer, juvenile diabetes and pediatric AIDS combined.

Medical consultants for the project stress that an early diagnosis can make a vast difference for toddlers and their families. They say early intensive behavioral intervention can make an immense difference not just in the development of the child, but in their families as well.

A physician referral is not required. To schedule a screening, please call 239-343-6838.

Rotary Christmas Tree Sale Tradition Continues

The Bonita Springs Rotary Club begins its 30th season of selling Christmas trees to raise funds for its charitable work.  The Bonita Rotary Club is one of the few service organizations left in SW Florida marketing trees in competition with profit-making big box retailers and grocery stores. All the money raised goes to service projects.  The local Club’s effort includes several Sponsorship opportunities which are available for local merchants and organizations with significant signage and marketing offered.

The Rotary Club will erect its familiar tent alongside Bonita Beach Rd in the Sunshine Plaza.  It is a sight well known to locals. Purchasing trees to support the many projects of the Rotary Club is a tradition among many SWFL residents and businesses. This year the Club will provide hot chocolate to shoppers and a gift bag full of coupons and gift items from local sponsors to all who purchase a tree.

In the past, funds raised by the tree sales have supported life–saving surgery for children, scholarships for local kids, money for the Little League, the Center for the Arts, the Bonita Springs Assistance Office, the Youth Outreach Program, water projects in Guatemala, Junior achievement and more.  The local Rotary Club also provides a mentoring program for Roterac students at FGCU.

Christmas trees are shipped from North Carolina directly to the Bonita Springs site several times during the selling season which begins at the Thanksgiving Holiday and runs into December.  As a result, the trees are fresh full and there are always several varieties.

“We’ve had people come from as far as Marco Island and Punta Gorda to get trees from us” said Jay Berube, this year’s Club chair for the tree selling event.”The folks tell us it is a family tradition for them to visit us and they know their purchase will provide a significant holiday boost to someone less fortunate.  They know we use all the proceeds to do service work and that none of it is for profit or administration – it all goes to pay for Rotary charitable projects.”

The Bonita Rotary Club is also offering poinsettia plants for sale this Christmas season.   Poinsettias can be ordered from any Bonita Rotary Club member or purchased at the Christmas tree tent.

For more information regarding the Bonita Beach Rotary Christmas tree sale event, contact Mark Generales 239 676 5676 or go online to http://bonitaspringsrotary.org/

A physician referral is not required. To schedule a screening, please call 239-343-6838.

A physician referral is not required. To schedule a screening, please call 239-343-6838.

In the 1880s mail was sorted aboard moving trains.  Owney, a terrier mix was adopted by mail clerks in Albany, NY.  One day the mail sack that Owney was fond of sleeping on was filled with mail and thrown on a train.  Owney followed his mail sack and began a career of riding the rails.  He became a good luck charm to Railway Mail Service clerks between 1890 and 1900.  Working in the Railway Mail Service was highly dangerous, more than 80 mail clerks were killed in train wrecks and more than 2,000 were injured.  It was said that no train ever met with trouble while Owney was aboard.

To learn more about The Shelter's "National Domestic Violence Awareness Month: Empowering a community so that every home is a safe haven for the family that it shelters" activities, please call 239.775.3862.

October was dedicated as National Domestic Violence Awareness Month in an effort to raise awareness about a social epidemic that effects 1 in 4 women and 1 in 14 men during their lifetimes.

It was first observed in 1987 having evolved from the 1981 "Day of Unity." Congress passed Public Law 101-112 designating October 1989 as National Domestic Violence Awareness Month and similar legislation has passed every year since.

EAT PIZZA; HELP

NAPLES EMPTY BOWLS

Who doesn’t like pizza?  On Thursday, September 29, you can enjoy a delicious pizza—and at the same time, help the Naples Empty Bowls event purchase needed supplies to make their bowls!  California Pizza Kitchen, located in Waterside Shops, will donate 20 percent of your purchase all day to assist the Naples Empty Bowls event.

The purchase of dine-in, take-out, catering, and alcoholic beverages are all included in the amount to be donated.  The Naples Empty Bowls event, this year to be held on Saturday, January 28, provides funds for the Harry Chapin Food Bank, which distributes food to local food pantries and through its Mobile Feeding Pantries.  Last year’s event raised over $30,000; this translated into $180,000 of food and services the food bank could provide.

Information about the day’s event or to order pizza can be obtained by calling 239-566-1900 or going to www.cpk.com.

The Harry Chapin Food Bank solicits, collects and stores quality food for distribution to families in need through a network of 186 local nonprofit agencies in Lee, Collier, Hendry, Charlotte and Glades counties, who provide food to more than 30,000 people monthly.  Over 1 million pounds of food are distributed monthly.  For every dollar donated, about $6 in food value goes back to the community.  In the past fiscal year, The Harry Chapin Food Bank distributed 12.5 million pounds of food and other grocery products; this was a 31% increase over the previous year.

NEED AN OIL CHANGE?  YOU CAN

HELP HARRY CHAPIN FOOD BANK

ON SEPTEMBER 23 AND 24

Do you own a car?  If so, it needs regular oil changes.  And, on Friday and Saturday, September 23 and 24, the three Super-Lube locations in Lee County will donate a portion of the proceeds from each car having an oil change to the Harry Chapin Food Bank.

With the ever-increasing number of “food insecure” families in our neighborhoods, the food bank needs more and more food to distribute.  Each $1 donated to the food bank results in $6 worth of food and services being available to its partner agencies.

The three Super-Lube locations participating in the two days’ promotion are

  • 15621 San Carlos Blvd., Fort Myers 33908, 239-437-5111

  • 4703 Del Prado Blvd. South, Cape Coral 33904, 239-549-8211
  • 15140 S. Tamiami Trail, Fort Myers 33908, 239-437-2296

For additional information about the oil change donations, please contact Tommy Moylan at 239-218-1980.

Space 39 features work of Arts in Healthcare Program

Fort Myers, Fla (Sept. 8, 2011) --- Art created by participants in the disABLEd Arts program is on display now at Space 39 in downtown Fort Myers. The art is featured in the W’indigos alley gallery on the

Hendry Street

entrance.  Several pieces of art are being featured, including paintings, a multimedia piece, and a hand-painted quilt which showcase the creative skills of physically disabled artists. The disabled Arts program is part of Lee Memorial Health System's Arts in Healthcare Program.

The artwork is available for sale with a portion of the proceeds benefitting the Arts in Healthcare program.  For more information about the exhibit or the program, you can email Art@leememorial.org call (239) 343-2633 or email Space 39 at Info@spacethirtynine.com. Immediately following the terrorist attacks, local blood centers experienced an outpouring of charitable spirit by the multitude of blood donors who came to give their gifts of life. Literally hundreds of people quickly descended upon the Community Blood Center's main offices a decade ago. Many waited nearly five hours in line before they finally had the opportunity to roll up their sleeves. Many donors commented that they felt compelled to "do something to help" on that awful day.  Donating blood this September 11 is one way people can help to save lives and memorialize the lives of people impacted by the terrorist attacks of 2001.   Every 2 seconds someone in America needs blood so the Community Blood Center encourages everyone to pay it forward, give blood and save 3 lives with a single pint. People can donate blood every 56 days. Anyone who weighs at least 110 pounds can give blood. Minimum age to donate is 16, with parental consent. There is no upper age maximum to give blood. All donors must supply photo ID at time of donation.  Donating blood is easy and safe. Donors must eat prior to giving blood and should be well hydrated. Most medications will not prevent someone from donating blood, including but not limited to: aspirin, insulin, blood pressure, cholesterol, and thyroid medications, anti-depressants, birth control and hormone replacement therapy.

LABOR DAY BECOMES NO PET LABOR DAY

OFFERING $100 IN SAVINGS TO PET OWNERS

_____________________________________________________________________

No More Labor Day for Pets Event Sept. 6-7, 2011 $40-$80 spay/neuter   Register by calling (239) 514-7647

(Naples, Fla.) – In celebration of Labor Day, Collier Spay Neuter Clinic (CSNC) will be offering special price incentives for owners to schedule their pets for spay and neuter during the clinic's two-day No More Labor Day for Pets event.

On Tuesday, Sept. 6 and Wednesday, Sept. 7, pets owners can take advantage Collier Spay Neuter Clinic's (CSNC) No More Labor Day for Pets extreme savings on spay and neuter services nearly half the cost. Reduced fees will save family an average of $100 .

No More Pet Labor Day Event Promotion Prices

  • Flat fee for all cats and dogs

  • $40 male cat (free if male comes with a female cat or dog)
  • $60 male dog (free if male comes with a female cat or dog)
  • $60 female cat
  • $80 female dog

Consumers watching their purse strings are certainly looking  for more affordable pet care as well.  The clinic's savings are exclusive to Southwest Florida residents.

One male cat or dog can father multiple unwanted litters, nearly simultaneously, from several females.

“The No More Labor Day For Pets promotion is a great way to remind folks of the importance of neutering their male pets, even with cats and dogs it takes two to tango and males are just as guilty as the females" said CSNC Executive Director Pallas Diaz.

Fewer pets breeding reduces the number of unwanted litters which would otherwise end up wandering alone in the streets, or put down at local shelters already overloaded with homeless pets.

"Eliminating unwanted litters by having your pets fixed affordably should definitely be worth it for most pet owners. However, neutering also can have substantial health benefits for cats and for dogs and can  improve many of the nuisance pet behaviors associated with mating, helping pets and their owners to have longer, healthier and happier lives together”, said Diaz.

CSNC reached its 7,500 surgery mark the first of August and the No More Pet Labor Day event is one more step the clinic is taking to meet its mission to provide a non-lethal alternative to pet homelessness by offering targeted high quality, high volume spay and neuter services.

To qualify for the No More Labor Day for Pets event prices from Sept. 6 to 7, clients must mention "No More Pet Labor Day" when calling otherwise normal fees apply.

To schedule a spay or neuter appointment for your pet call (239) 514-SNIP (7647). The clinic is located at 2544 Northbrooke Plaza Dr. in Naples, one block east of the intersection of I-75 and Immokalee Rd.  Learn more about spay and neuter efforts at www.collierspayneuter.org

Celebrate a Labor of Love by Adopting a New Pet!

Fort Myers, Fla, 9/1/11—While our country celebrates the dedication and achievements of the American worker on Labor Day, Lee County Domestic Animal Services will offer an opportunity to take on a labor of love this September by reducing puppy and kitten adoption fees to only $50.  Adopters will also receive a 40% discount when they adopt an adult pet, making the adoption fee for adult dogs and cats $45 and $30, respectively.  Cats and kittens are always two for one at Animal Services so the discounts could be even greater for those wanting to double the return on their investment.

“Puppies and kittens require a lot of work but are well worth the time for a pet that is a well-behaved family member,” says Donna Ward, LCDAS Director.  “The life-time benefits of unconditional love and companionship certainly outweigh the commitment of time.”  LCDAS will have experienced staff and volunteers on hand to help adopters choose pets that best fit their lifestyle.

The discounted fees still include spay or neuter surgery, age appropriate vaccinations, rabies and county license (for pets 3 months and older), heartworm test (for dogs 6 months and older), feline aids and leukemia test (for cats), flea treatment, worming, microchip ID, 10 day health guarantee, and a bag of Science Diet pet food.  The entire adoption package is valued at over $500.

LEETRAN AND PUBLIX TEAM UP

TO ASSIST HARRY CHAPIN FOOD BANK

Here’s a grocery shopper alert!  On Sunday, September 18, Lee County Transit (LeeTran) is deploying its fleet of buses to all Publix locations throughout Lee County to collect food for the Harry Chapin Food Bank.

This is the third annual “Fill Our Fleet – Feed Our Hungry” promotion LeeTran and Publix have participated in.  Last year, 72,998 pounds of food were collected during the one-day event.  Publix will have pre-packaged sacks of groceries for the public to purchase; individual purchases will also be welcome.

LeeTran buses will park in the Publix parking lots from 11:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. for shoppers to fill bins with nonperishable food.  At 3:00 p.m., the buses will caravan to the Harry Chapin Food Bank’s Fowler Street warehouse, where volunteers will unload the donations.

LeeTran drivers and other employees are volunteering their day’s labor to serve the community. The event is being co-sponsored by the Beasley Broadcast Group, Inc., and The News-Press Media Group.

Harry Chapin Food Bank Associate Director Joyce Jacobs noted that the food bank is hoping for the same outpouring of support that they experienced in the National Association of Letter Carrier Food Drive in May.

In the past fiscal year, The Harry Chapin Food Bank distributed 12.5 million pounds of food and other grocery products; this was a 31% increase over the previous year.

von Liebig Exhibits Inner Worlds of Domestic Violence Survivors II for National Domestic Violence Awareness Month

Naples, FL - 8/23/11-  The Shelter for Abused Women & Children is partnering with The Naples Art Association to present "Inner Worlds of Domestic Violence Survivors II," an eye-opening exhibit at The von Liebig Art Center, Studio #104, 585 Park Street, Naples 34102, September 12 through October 12, 2011.

The exhibit, which features art created by victims and survivors of domestic violence participating in The Shelter's Healing Arts program, is set to coincide with National Domestic Violence Month.

The program's goal is to help victims move from trauma to healing. Through paper, canvas, pastels, paints and counseling, victims are able to give shape and form to extreme emotions which brings them to a path of self-love and personal empowerment.

According to Healing Arts Advocate Ivette Gomez, "When a survivor's artwork is viewed by a larger audience, there is confirmation and acknowledgement of the traumatic events...the process helps her understand the depth of her experience and gives her insight into the reconstruction of her life. This is a transformational process."

"Inner Worlds of Domestic Violence Survivor II" is one of five community-based events The Shelter is hosting to bring attention to relationship violence and services available for victims as part of National Domestic Violence Awareness Month in October.

“Men Making a Difference” for

Make-A-Wish Foundation® of Southern Florida

(July 19, 2011 – Southwest Florida) – Many hands make any task easier and men seem to know this fact from an early age. Whether building a childhood fort or organizing a winning baseball team -- they just seem to know that teamwork is what it’s all about.  This thought gave way to the idea of the “Men Making a Difference” special event fundraiser for the Make-A-Wish Foundation® of Southern Florida.

The event will be held September 17 from 11 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. on the Naples Princess. The goal is to get men involved in the mission of the Make-A-Wish Foundation with a hope of granting two to three wishes for Collier County children.

Men wanting to make a difference in the lives of children with life-threatening medical conditions will set sail on the Naples Princess for a unique networking event that will help make wishes come true in Collier County.  During this sightseeing cruise, guests will have the opportunity to enjoy a remarkable beer tasting; savor the flavor of food prepared and provided by Shula’s  Steak House; delight in a smoke prepared by a seasoned cigar roller; and relax and listen to a steel drum performance.

The “Men Making a Difference” cruise event on the Naples Princess leaves from 550 Port-O-Call Way in Naples. Tickets are $125 per person and interested parties may either call or email to RSVP. Space will be limited and early registration is suggested. Contact Lesley Colantonio at 239-992-9474, or email lcolantonio@sflawish.org.

The Make-A-Wish Foundation of Southern Florida grants wishes to children with life-threatening medical conditions to enrich the human experience with hope, strength, and joy. Twenty-eight years of magic and more than 8,000 wishes later, the Foundation continues its mission to share the power of a wish® with ailing children. For more information, to make a donation, volunteer or become a wish sponsor, visit www.sfla.wish.org  or call Make-A-Wish Foundation of Southern Florida at (239) 992-9474.

August is Awesome Adoption Month
at Lee County Domestic Animal Services

Fort Myers, Florida, 7/28/11— As the end of summer approaches, Lee County Domestic Animal Services still has an abundance of pets needing homes at its facility.  During the shelter’s August Awesome Adoption promotion, adopters will have a chance to save a life while saving money too.  There are more than 200 pets presently at the shelter and in foster homes.  The shelter hopes to reduce the number of pets needing homes by reducing adoption fees from 20% to 100%.  Adoption fees for August are:

Puppies - $75 (regularly $95)

Adult Dogs - $25 (regularly $75)

Kittens - $20* (regularly $75)

Adult Cats - $10* (regularly $50)

Senior Pets** – free (regularly $25)

*Kittens and cats are always 2 for 1

                                                **Six years and older

“We want to eliminate any reason someone would have to acquire a pet anywhere but at a shelter,” says Donna Ward, LCDAS Director.  “We have every type of breed, size or age you could want including many pure bred animals,” she adds.  The agency firmly believes that with the selection available at the shelter and the cost to adopt drastically reduced, there is no better place to get your next best friend.

Although reduced, the adoption fee will still include the same veterinary services valued at over $500.  All pets receive spay or neuter surgery, age appropriate vaccinations, rabies and county license (for pets 3 months and older), heartworm test (for dogs 6 months and older), feline aids and leukemia test (for cats), flea treatment, worming, microchip ID, 10 day health guarantee, and a bag of Science Diet pet food.

For more information about the August Awesome Adoptions call 239-533-7387 (LEE-PETS) or visit www.LeeLostPets.com.

Collier County, FL: July 29, 2011: The need for blood in
Collier County continues, despite the support of many blood donors who responded to the
NCH Community Blood Center’s appeal. Blood usage continues to outpace donor support, so people are being urged to give blood this weekend as well as next week. Blood centers typically seek additional resources from the National Blood Exchange to help supplement blood types for which they run low.  However, much of the nation’s blood surpluses have practically dried up, particularly type O+ and all Rh negative blood types, O-, B- and A-.  An all out blood shortage can be prevented if more of the area’s donors give their blood and help to infuse more life into the local supplies. People can give blood at the following locations & can become eligible to win a
Busch Gardens,
Tampa 2-day package for 4 and an over-night stay at Wingate by Wyndham:

SAVE THE DATE: NOVEMBER 12 IN NAPLES

WALK-A-THON FOR EPILEPSY AWARENESS

Naplesresident Dan Rosenfeld, with support from the Epilepsy Foundation of Florida (EFOF), will present the 2ndannual “Walk the Talk for Epilepsy Awareness” walk-a-thon in Naples on November 12 at North Collier Regional Park.

In addition to welcoming individual participants, Rosenfeld and the EFOF are seeking corporate sponsorships and teams to participate in the fund-raising event.

All proceeds will support EFOF services such as direct medical and neuropsychological services, advocacy and counseling, education, prevention and more for people diagnosed with epilepsy and seizure disorders.

Rosenfeld is one of the more than 375,000 Floridians who are stricken with the disorder.  He began organizing the event because epilepsy, despite its prevalence, does not attract the widespread attention, research and funding as other major neurological conditions.

“We’re very proud and appreciative of an individual like Dan to take such strong initiative in advocating our cause,” said Karen Basha Egozi, EFOF Chief Executive Officer.  “The more attention and support we raise, the more we can serve the community and come closer to preventing epilepsy for thousands of other Floridians.”

The walk-a-thon will begin with registration at 8 a.m. at North Collier Regional Park, 15000 Livingston Road, Naples, 34109.

Registration is free, but walkers are requested to raise at least $50 in pledges. T-shirts and other gifts will be distributed, and prizes will be awarded for the largest fundraiser.

For more details on the Naples event, call Dan on 239 254-7710 or email DBRosenfeld08@gmail.com.  Registration forms and additional information can be found at www.EpilepsyFLA.org.

Give Pets a Chance for Independence!

Fort Myers, Florida, 6/22/11—This July as we celebrate our country’s independence, Lee County Domestic Animal Services hopes you will give a homeless pet a chance for independence too!  Throughout the entire month adult cats may be adopted for $10 and kittens for just $30.  A select variety of dogs will be available for $30 also.  This represents a 60 to 80% reduction in regular adoption fees.

Local fireworks have officially begun with a population explosion at the shelter.  The increase coincides with the start of kitten season which began in May.  Five hundred forty four (544) cats entered the shelter in May compared to a monthly average of only 284 in January through April, a 91% increase.

“We are utilizing every foster home we have available to give these cats and kittens a chance,” says Donna Ward, LCDAS Director.  “Kittens raised in a foster home are very sociable, playful, and have the benefit of early litter training,” she adds.  Once kittens are old enough they return to the shelter for adoption.

Although fees will be reduced, the adoption package valued at $500 still includes the following:

  • Spay/neuter surgery

  • Age-appropriate vaccinations
  • Rabies vaccination and county license for pets over 3 months
  • 10-day pet health guarantee
  • Microchip ID
  • Feline Leukemia and Aids test for cats
  • Heartworm test for dogs over 6 months
  • Flea treatment
  • De-worming
  • Training DVD
  • Bag of Science Diet Pet Food

Photos and information about lost pets or pets for adoption are available on the agency’s website at http://www.leelostpets.com.  Pet info on the website updates hourly.  Anyone interested in fostering pets may also obtain an application online.

Follow the Canvas

A large billboard size canvas will travel all summer throughout Southwest Florida in honor of the "Remember 9-11 Tenth Year" event.
First stop, Art Walk Downtown at The Franklin Shops.

Ft Myers  June 17, 2001 --Leoma Lovegrove has planned a community-wide art project to take place in the days leading up to Sept. 11. She is escorting a canvas measuring 18 feet by 10 feet around the area on which members of the public will be invited to paint the names of those who perished on Sept. 11, 2001.

The first venue will be The Franklin Shops on July 1 during Art Walk. Names of those who lost their lives at the World Trade Center will be painted in red. At subsequent locations, different colors will be used for the names from the Pentagon and the four airplanes. In all, the more than 3,000 names will form the base of a painting of an American bald eagle. Lovegrove will be there to assist with the painting of the names.

The canvas will be completed by Lovegrove during Remember 9-11 Tenth Year at the Broadway Palm Dinner Theatre on Sept. 11, 2011, beginning at 11:30 a.m. Lovegrove and many others have partnered with her on this project to make sure that those who lost their lives are never forgotten and to honor those who conducted rescue efforts. Members of the NYPD 1013 Local will take part at the event as will members of American Airlines Suncoast KIWI9/11 Memorial.

THE NEWS.........OR SOMETHING LIKE IT

Ginger Lee  should keep her day job, whatever that is.

Ginger Lee? Ginger Lee? Ginger Lee? Hmmmmmm. Oh yeah, ANTHONY WEINER's porn star sexting mate.

Anyway, Ginger Lee appeared at an Atlanta strip club called Pink Pony the other night. You may also know that Ginger's attorney, Gloria Allred, has said that Ginger is suffering from emotional distress. Unfortunately for Ginger  THAT wasn't apparent in her 'dancing'. Seems also that her several minutes of fame may be over as the Pink Pony crowd was sparse and applause weak.

Oops.

In a House Fire, 53% of People Would Save Their Photos and Only 12% Would Save Their Electronics

Remember this every time you hear that technology is stealing our souls.  We're still a bunch of sentimental fools.  We're just sentimental fools who also happen to have fantastic TVs and iPads.

--In a new survey, Americans made it very clear that in a house fire, nostalgia and memories are more important than electronics.

--The survey asked:  In a house fire, after you knew your loved ones and pets were safe, what one item would you try to save from your home?  And PHOTOS were by far the number one answer, getting 53% of the vote.

--Electronics only got 12%.

--A specific item of clothing came in third, at 10% . . . jewelry was fourth, at 9% . . . and a particular book was fifth, at 3%.

--The rest of the people gave another miscellaneous answer.
