Taylor Swift Drops Video At MTV VMAs
There’s a lot to unpack here.
Taylor Swift goes Michael Jackson “Thriller” in the premiere of her music video “Look What You Made Me Do, before she blasts into the imagery for the newest hit.
Moving into the video, Taylor goes from being dead in her grave to in a tub with diamonds. There’s a car accident (which TRUST ME when I say this), the image of the car crash initially looks like Kim Kardashian crashing a car, but then you see Tay.
There’s a vault robbery with cat masks and a baseball bat, a motorcycle chic Taylor, and Snake Taylor Queen.
As if that isn’t already hard to digest with your eyeballs, Taylor then dons a BDSM latex leather outfit, laying on the side of a pile of other girls, before she takes head at the head of her “SQUAD” at a podium.
Now, up until this point I kind of shrugged and felt this was overhyped. This is where that moment changed.
When Taylor says “I don’t trust nobody and nobody trusts me,” you see that she’s standing on top of a pile of girls. But as you get closer to the girls in the pile, they are all Taylor in images that Taylor used to be. Country Taylor, Ring Master Taylor, “Teardrops On My Guitar Taylor,” and even “You Belong With Me” Taylor.
The stretch of this video is Taylor Swift dancing. Someone obviously taught her some choreography, but she slaps her hips with her hands like Regina George does during the “Jingle Bell Rock” and that I’m really not here for.
You then see a lineup of Taylors standing in front of a plane that is being vandalized with “Reputation” on the plane.
If you’re still not convinced that there’s a vindicating quality to this, it’s the after dialogue. The Taylors all start talking, and it’s honestly pretty hilarious. 2009 VMA Taylor is standing there stunned, while one of the younger versions of Taylor starts crying because one of the current day Taylors tell her she’s so fake. VMA Taylor says that she doesn’t want to be part of this narrative, and a bunch of the Taylors yell SHUT UP, or something to that effect, before it ends.
I’m still concerned Taylor Swift is is one razor away from a Britney Spears type meltdown, but I guess we’ll see.
We assume that the video will be up tomorrow, if not tonight.
Amy Cooper is one with the force, and the force is with her.
