The teenager responsible for the mass shooting at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School, Nikolas Cruz was formally charged yesterday with 17 counts of first-degree murder. If convicted, that could mean a death sentence for Cruz. He also faces 17 counts of attempted murder .
A gun control bill is on Governor Scott’s desk, the question remains will he sign it. The bill includes raising the minimum age for gun purchases to 21, and a 3-day waiting period for most gun purchases. The bill would also give the police additional powers to confiscate weapons and ammunition, and would implement a school marshal program that would arm some teachers and staff.
The Governor says he’s going to carefully examine the bill. He’s not in favor of arming teachers.
Florida’s US Senators Marco Rubio and Bill Nelson announced a new measure yesterday. The bill they introduced would incentivize states to enact gun violence restraining orders. Under the plan, which is already law in five other states, family members or authorities would be able to petition the court to prevent a person from having guns if they are deemed dangerous.
