What SWFL Is Talking About 8/21
At yesterdays Council Meeting, the city of Fort Myers declared a state of emergency to help combat the algae blooms on the Caloosahatchee River and the red tide off the Gulf Coast. Last week, Gov. Rick Scott declared a red tide state of emergency for seven counties, including Lee. The city says The declaration is consistent with efforts by Governor Scott, the County and neighboring cities to make sure this area has access to federal and state funds.
It looks like the downtown Luminary hotel project will now be pushed back a bit now that the city and the family who sold the property are locked in litigation. Delays mean higher costs for the project. In addition to the hotel building, it would include a new parking garage and renovations to the Harborside Event Center. The family that sold the property to the city claims that the city agreed to not use the space for commercial purposes when the sale took place
Wisner Desmaret, accused of shooting and killing Fort Myers Police Officer Adam Jobbers-Miller, entered a not guilty plea Monday morning. Last week, the state announced they will seek the death penalty against Desmaret. His next court date is August 31st.
Madonna Gets No R-E-S-P-E-C-T
Madonna made an appearance at last night’s VMAs to pay tribute to Aretha Franklin and Twitter didn’t like it at all. Before Madonna was to present the award for video of the year, she told a story of how Aretha “changed the course of her life.” Instead it turned into Madonna giving tribute to Madonna on how Aretha influenced her life, and social media wasn’t about to let it slide. One user said, “I would rather have had Madonna butcher an Aretha song instead of talking about herself for almost ten minutes.”
