No arrests have been made, but police continue to investigate the murder of 66 year old Brenda Hill who was found dead Monday night at her home at Grandma’s RV Resort in LaBelle. Anyone with information is asked to call Crime Stoppers at 1-800-780-TIPS.

Federico Fernandez, the chairman of the South Florida Water Management District Governing Board announced he’ll be stepping down from the board at the request of Governor  DeSantis after the February board meeting. Fernandez  made the announcement in a memo, saying he was proud of the work of the board during his tenure, but it’s clear the Governor has his own vision for the Water Management District. Two other board members announced their resignations yesterday as well. Governor DeSantis will be back in Southwest Florida today, speaking at Ida Baker high School.

 

14 year old Josie Bigelow of Lehigh Acres must have some boyfriend….She wanted to see him so bad, she allegedly stole a pizza delivery driver’s car early yesterday morning. Apparently she ordered the pizza so she could steal the car. Bigelow and the pizza delivery driver’s vehicle were recovered several miles away. She’s been charged with grand theft.
 41 days in jail for possessing Tide Detergent. It happened here in Florida to 29 year old Matt Crull from Martin County, jailed because his arresting deputy determined the 92 gram stash Crull had in his car was heroin. Subsequent tests determined the powder was indeed Tide. The arresting officer has been fired.

Should Election Day Become a Federal Holiday?

  • Senate majority leader Mitch McConnell believes that a Democratic bill that would make Election Day a federal holiday is a “power grab”.
  • The H.R. 1 bill, if law, would allow federal workers to have the day off and would encourage private employers to allow their employees the time off.
  • McConnell has spoken against the bill saying “Just what America needs.  A bunch of government workers to be paid to go out and work for our colleagues on the other side and their campaigns.”
  • His statement was criticized across social media.  Brian Schatz, D-Hawaii tweeted “Voting is a power grab…by citizens.  Voting should be easy.”

Kansas Mom Goes to Bar, Leaves Toddlers in Car in Bitter Cold

  • A Kansas mom has been arrested after authorities say she left her two toddlers in her car while she went to a bar amid the polar vortex crippling much of the midwest.
  • Lawrence police were called about 1:30 a.m. Wednesday after the woman had been kicked out but kept trying to reenter the bar. Staff told officers she had been drinking while her kids were outside in the vehicle.
  • Although the woman was gone by the time police arrived – officers were able to track her down and pull her over.
  • Temperatures had been in the single-digits and while the children were unhurt, according to one officer, they had been left “without heat for a substantial amount of time.”

Facebook Paid Teens $20 A Month To Access Their Data

  • Facebook has been accused of yet another shady-sounding data collection method – this time paying teenagers to hand over their data for a ‘research program’.
  • TechCrunch reports that an app called ‘Facebook Research’ paid people $20 a month to access their data – not just within Facebook, but almost everything on the phone –  including photos, videos, instant messages, and web browsing.
  • Even wilder, the program targeted to people as young as 13 years old, and offered $20 gift cards if teens referred their friends.
  • The Research app has since been banned in iOS but continues to be available for Android devices.

  • Wendy’s wants you to have your beef and bacon too.
  • If you order Wendy’s through Door Dash this week, you can get a free Baconator sandwich with the purchase of $10 or more.
  • You’ll have to type in FREEBACONATOR at checkout.
  • The deal is good through February 4th.

 

Study Links E-Cigarettes To Heart Attacks, Strokes

  • Electronic cigarettes, or ‘E-cigs’, are generally thought of as a healthier alternative to smoking.  But a new study links vaping to a higher risk of heart attack or stroke.
  • The study says non-smokers who regularly use e-cigs have a 29 percent higher risk of stroke and 25 percent higher risk of heart attack.
  • For those who smoke regular cigarettes AND use e-cigs, the risk jumps up to 60-70 percent.
  • Recently, the CDC began to crack down on the use of e-cigs by young people, with reports that up to 11 percent of high school students have used a vape in the last month.
