The ‘Cats’ Trailer: Twitter Isn’t Sure What To Make Of Those Felines
The Jellicle cats of the new Cats movie finally made their debut last night and they looked, well, a little funny. The official Cats movie trailer introduced fans to the musical’s cast, which includes Jennifer Hudson, Idris Elba, Jason Derulo, and Taylor Swift, who are as feline as humans can get.
That’s thanks (or maybe not, depending on who you ask), to director Tom Hooper who used digital fur technology to make them look more cat-like.
Seriously, Swift’s kitties Olivia, Meredith, and her newest edition, Benjamin Button, who made his debut in the video for “ME!,” might not even recognize their owner. “I am a cat now and somehow that was everything,” Swift tweeted after the trailer dropped.

Others, though, weren’t sure how they felt about this experiment, which some thought was a real CATastrophe. One fan even questioned if this was all a ploy to turn cat-lover Swift into an actual cat. While another wondered if Swift’s “You Need To Calm Down” was really a reaction to the Cats trailer.
Technology has only evolved so one day Taylor Swift could become an actual cat. 😸✨ pic.twitter.com/mZKKNZ4Rv0

I don't know why you're all freaking out over miniature yet huge cats with human celebrity faces and sexy breasts performing a demented dream ballet for kids.

“Maybe we were too harsh on Sonic,” journalist Kristy Puchko tweeted in reference to the backlash after the Sonic The Hedgehog trailer gave him human-looking teeth. The reaction was so bad that the makers of the film pushed back the release date so they could make some dental changes to the character.

Don’t worry, many were quick to point out the irony that the Twitterverse was complaining about The Lion King looking too real while calling out Cats for not looking real enough.
movie studio execs: so wait, you hated when we made the animals too real in the lion king and now you hate when we went the other way and made them little cat people... pic.twitter.com/0XyKlJLt2B

ok but in CATS' defense this route doesn't make any LESS sense than imposing "photorealism" onto singing, dancing cats

Cats fans and fans of cats will have to search their memory for a time before they saw these kitties. For now, take solace in listening to Hudson’s spot-on version of “Memory” featured in the trailer.
