Ariana Grande’s ‘Boyfriend’ Video Is A Stylish Look At A Very Complicated Relationship
Ariana Grande’s relationship status is definitely complicated in her new video for “Boyfriend.”
In the clip for her new one-off track featuring her tourmates Social House, Grande prances around in a mansion trying to make her guy, who isn’t exactly her boyfriend, fall for her. “I know we be so complicated/But we be so smitten, it’s crazy/I can’t have what I want, but neither can you,” she sings before tackling another woman for getting a little to close to him. Later, she channels her inner Katniss Everdeen to put an arrow through a different woman’s hand for chatting him up.
Of course, that girl-on-girl aggression is all in Grande’s head. It’s just what she wishes she could do about this undefined relationship. “You ain’t my boyfriend,” Grande sings on the chorus. “And I ain’t your girlfriend/But you don’t want me to see nobody else/And I don’t want you to see nobody.”
On Twitter, Grande talked about the message behind “Boyfriend.” “People want to feel love but don’t want to define their relationship & have trouble fully committing or trusting or allowing themselves to fully love someone,” she wrote of her latest single. “Even tho they want to.”
That’s why the song gets at all those intense feelings we have when we’re falling in love. “We wanted to make something uplifting that captures that feeling of being afraid to take the leap & trust,” Grande tweeted. “Being afraid of being hurt or feeling like you won’t be enough for that person … but also how it feels to have a crippling crush on someone.”
Now she’ll have to wait and see if fans have a major crush on this track. Hopefully, they’ll even make it official.
