John Travolta Responds To Viral Taylor Swift VMAs Moment: ‘I Thought It Was So Funny’
John Travolta is finally speaking out about his viral Taylor Swift moment at the 2019 MTV VMAs. And it seems, Travolta is just gonna, well, shake it off.
In an interview, he confused Jade Jolie, a drag queen who impersonates Swift and appeared as her in the “You Need To Calm Down” video, for the real Taylor Swift.
“There’s so many people that bombarded the stage, that I was looking for [Swift]. So the video has me trying to find her, and you know, I thought it was so funny the way it was interpreted,” he said, per Entertainment Weekly. “And it’s cool, I didn’t care.”
In fact, he’s pretty used to making headlines. “If I shave my head, it’s headlines. If I mispronounce something, it’s headlines,” he said, referring to the 2014 Oscar moment when he mispronounced Idina Menzel’s name. “And I know that about me.”
Like Swift, Travolta found the whole thing pretty funny and wishes he would have thought to keep it going. “Sometimes I fantasize, what if I had given it to [Jolie]?” he said. “That would have been awesome. I should have just gone all the way with it.”
Jolie might have wished he did, too. Jolie told NewNowNext that Swift was “tickled” by Travolta’s harmless snafu. “[Swift] joked and was like, ‘You totally should have went for it!'” Jolie said.
Travolta shouldn’t feel too bad. Jolie said that Swift’s bestie Gigi Hadid also mistook her for the pop star. “The drunker we got,” Jolie joked, “I guess the more Taylor I became for everyone!”
