A man was arrested after he’s accused of firing several shots in a Cape Coral neighborhood and then taking off in a taxi cab. Cape Coral police were called to Northeast 27th Terrace and Northeast 3rd Avenue early Sunday morning after a neighbor reported the suspicious shots. The neighbor who called police noticed the suspect, later identified as 23-year-old Matthew Ames, get into a car traveling east on Kismet Parkway. Moments later, police found the car and stopped it at the 7-Eleven on Andalusia Parkway. According to Ames’s arrest report, the car he was in was a taxi cab. The taxi’s driver had actually driven Ames and another passenger earlier that day to a few bars. Ames contacted him again moments after allegedly firing the shots. Officers found cocaine, pills and a gun in plain sight. The gun matched the bullet casings located in the Cape Coral neighborhood. Matthew Ames is a convicted felon and therefore, isn’t even allowed to have one. He was arrested on several other charges, including drug possession.

Beekeepers removed more than half a million bees from next to a Lehigh Acres home. Michelle Smith called the keepers after her family kept getting stung on 3rd Street West. She realized how dangerous the bees could become. Beekeeper Charles Edwards said it’s the largest hive he has ever seen. He estimates it weighed 300 pounds, was about four feet tall and that they removed 650,000 bees. The crew first smoked out the bees, then used a gentle vacuum to move them into a new hive. They were taken free of charge to Cloud 9 Bee Farm in Hendry County.
