Ground Owl Predicts The Weather For Southwest Florida
Punxsutawney Phil predicted six more weeks of winter during the annual Groundhog Day ceremony in Pennsylvania Tuesday morning, but in Southwest Florida, we do things a little differently.
Ground-Owl Day is a continuing Cape Coral tradition where a special burrowing owl predicts how long winter will persist into spring.
This morning at the Pelican Baseball Complex, the Ground Owl did not see her shadow which means spring will arrive early!
“We don’t have groundhogs we have ground owls! And so this was a little dream of mine to create a replication of groundhog day. It’s very important because it’s our official city bird. We want to educate people on what our ground owl means to the city of cape coral,” said Pascha Donaldson with Cape Coral Friends of Wildlife.
John Gunter, the Mayor of Cape Coral, also proclaimed Feb. 2, 2021, as the official Ground Owl Day!

The big question of the day - Will the burrowing owl see his shadow & signal 6 more weeks of beautiful winter weather? Depends which way he looks pic.twitter.com/0oNdUnyOJZ
