Wine and Whisky Wednesday for Father’s Day
When it’s Father’s Day week, Wine Wednesday transitions to Wine and Whisky Wednesday in honor of dear ole dad. Let’s begin with wine.
I just tried this great red wine from the Rhone Valley in France, one of my favorite wine regions. It’s 70% syrah, the rest is grenache noir. The combination makes great food friendly wines.
In this case it results in a wine that is aromatic and complex yet so well balanced.
It’s a wine I would typically have with with perhaps some braised beef or grilled meats but instead, opened it with a red snapper in a savory Asian sauce and it was fantastic.
Don’t be afraid to pair red wine with seafood, it all depends on the preparation.
Whisky is a quintessential “dad drink” and it’s one that I have been enjoying more and more.
There are so many great choices out there now. The Macallan is a brand known world wide for its long history and quality. It’s one of the first distillers in Ireland, well “legal” distillery.
The Macallan’s portfolio is pretty expansive, both in terms of distilling methods and price. One of the most exclusive finds is The Macallan’s Double Cask 30 Years Old for $4000. If you are up for a splurge, but not quite that much, check out The Macallan Rare Cask. It is rich and warming and has a price tag of about $300.
The cocktail featured at the top of this story features The Macallan Double Cask 12 Years Old. Called The Macallan The Great Scott, here is the recipe:
2 oz The Macallan Double Cask 12 Years Old
0.5 oz Sweet vermouth
0.24 oz Honey
3 Dashes Angostura bitters
Glass: Rocks
Combine all ingredients in a rocks glass, and add ice. Stir until chilled. Garnish with an orange twist and enjoy.
Cognac is another possibility for the discerning dad. Rémy Martin is introducing an engraved, Limited Edition Rémy Martin XO bottle that is like a work of art, $258. This famous cognac is perfect for sitting and sipping with dad after dinner, perhaps with some chocolates or even a cigar. While it would almost be a shame to mix this special blend, if you must, try this Old Fashioned recipe.
Old Fashioned
1¾ oz Rémy Martin XO
Brown sugar
Bitters
In a glass, soak the sugar lump in the bitters. Then add two cubes of ice. Pour the cognac over and stir until silky smooth, adding more ice as you stir. Garnish with an orange twist
