The 35th American Sand Sculpting Championship will happen Nov. 20-24 at the DiamondHead Beach Resort on Fort Myers Beach. Over 20 sculptors from across the globe are expected to compete at the expanded site.
The contest returns to the resort for its second year after a two-year gap caused by Hurricane Ian. Last year's event beat attendance predictions, according to Neil Hopgood, general manager at DiamondHead Beach Resort.
"We have doubled the space this year to allow for more sculptors and vendors on site, and doubled the size of our demonstration, presentation, and entertainment tent," Hopgood said, according to Fort Myers Beach Observer and Bulletin.
The championship will feature master and advanced amateur artists from more than 10 countries. Competitors will create sculptures during the five-day event at the beachfront location.
Live music will play under a tent each evening. Gashouse Gorillas will perform Friday, Nov. 21, from 5-8 p.m. Chasing Denver takes the stage Saturday, Nov. 22, from 5-8 p.m., and High Voltage closes out the weekend Sunday, Nov. 23, from 5-8 p.m.
Liszak said the championship gives visitors a chance "to witness breathtaking sand sculptures and experience the vibrant atmosphere that defines Fort Myers Beach." She recommended early reservations because of limited hotel rooms and vacation rentals. Visitors should check out "stay and play" deals at local resorts, Liszak said.
The Fort Myers Beach Chamber of Commerce presents the championship in collaboration with The Sand Lovers, LLC, and DiamondHead Beach Resort.
