I see so many taquerias and Mexican restaurants when traveling from Southwest Florida through the interior of the Sunshine State via U.S. Highways 17 and 27. I often want to pull up to one of the taco stands but always seem to whiz right by. However, that changed on a recent road trip with friends. Only this one is not a taco stand, it’s a sit down restaurant. Favorite Florida Pit Stops goes Mexican along Route 27 at Los Potosinos.
Favorite Florida Pit Stops is a dining series featuring places to pull off the side of the road for a break and a bite while traveling on some of the state’s main corridors. Los Potosinos is in the south part of Lake Wales close to the State Road 60 interchange. It sits back a little but the bright colors, and strange boat in front are recognizable to passersby.
Mexican along Route 27
Half of the restaurant is market full of Mexican staple food and drinks. In addition, there is a variety of other goods from clothing and prayer candles to pinatas and coals for grilling. It’s a casual place and the food comes out hot and fast. We ordered one item from the menu. the other two were specials listed on a white board.
Tamales were a special that we could not resist. There were three to an order and there were three of us. Done. The other special was barbacoa. We got it as a meal with beans and rice and the meat was outstanding. The server also brought out a packet of piping hot corn tortillas that were excellent. The menu is big and loaded with Mexican favorites.
The food was good but the price was even better. Three of us were dining. We had three entrees and the two who weren’t driving had one beer each. The tab was a mere $40. In addition, one small to-go box accompanied us home.
One more thing, if you are a fan of Italian cuisine, this Favorite Florida Pit Stop is just a little farther north on US 27. Finally, check out some photos from Mexican along Route 27
