Mornings With Gina Birch

I just need one more hour. How many times have you said that? Maybe it’s for sleep, to finish a project or prepare for company.  Regardless of the reason, that wish is coming true this weekend thanks to Daylight Savings Time. Here are the top ten things to do with that extra hour in Southwest Florida.

Setting the clock back for an extra hour

It happens on Sunday. We fall back. That means at 2am becomes 1am. You wont run the chance of being late to church or anything else on Sunday. However, if you don’t pay attention, you could be the first one to arrive by an hour. Not the worse thing that could happen but not ideal either.

This is a great example of what to do with that extra hour. First, reading a magazine. Next, spending time with family. This doubles your time well spent karma.

Time is a gift in more ways than one. I wish I had more time with friends and loved ones who have passed. On several occasions I wish I had more time when running through airports to catch a flight.  Or an extra hour on the beach that one perfect day in the islands. While none of us can get that kind of time back, we are given a gift this weekend. It might be small, but it could make a difference.

Don’t discount the impact of an hour, or what you can accomplish in a matter of 60 minutes. So how are your going to spend that extra time?

If you need help making a decision or some great ideas on how to spend that extra time, here a few things to consider. Perhaps this list will help inspire you. Check out the top ten thing to do with an extra hour in Southwest Florida for Daylight Savings Time.

  • Sleep In Or Take A Nap

This is one of the most obvious things to do. There is a better than average chance that you are sleep deprived. Naps are said to help boost learning and memory. They also help reduce stress among other things. Plus they just feel good.

  • Clean Out That Inbox

How many email accounts do you have? And how many emails are sitting in each of them? Hundreds for me. Just like clutter on your desk, clutter in your inbox can slow down your work flow and clog your creativity. Take some time to hit delete, respond, or file those messages.

  • Pick Up The Phone

When was the last time you called your mother? Or _____. Fill in the blank. A friend, a relative, someone who has been on your mind. Take the time to make that call this weekend. Texting is great but there is nothing like hearing someone’s voice.

  • Move Your Body

The weather should be nice so take a walk or play some pickleball. It might be a good time to get back in the gym like you’ve been promising to do. The hardest part of most exercise is getting out the door.

  • Get In The Kitchen

For some people, cooking is just as good for the soul as it is for the body. Make something healthy and make enough for meals later in the week.

  • Daydream

You may have been reprimanded for daydreaming in school. However, as an adult it has it’s benefits. It can help stimulate your creativity, find solutions to challenges, and reduces anxiety. Keep those dreams positive. What would you do with a billion dollar Powerball jackpot?

  • Self Care

When was the last time you did something for yourself? You likely take care of everyone around you first. Perhaps life has been stressful lately. Use that hour to decompress, pamper yourself, meditate, etc. Do something that lifts you up mentally, physically and/or spiritually. Even if that is buying a new pair of shoes. Self care has no rules.

  • Get A Jump On Holiday Planning

It is full steam ahead to Thanksgiving, Christmas and Hanukah. Now is a good time to start planning. Perhaps it is a guest list, meals, or a party. If you still sent out holiday cards, make your list. Or make that gift list so you don’t leave anyone out.

  • Read A Book Or Magazine

Getting lost in a good book is a luxury for many people. It’s a great way to escape. Or get caught up on that stack of magazines that has been pilling up on your coffee table.

  • Volunteer

How about serving food at a shelter. Or something simple like picking up trash on the beach or roadside. Giving back always feels good.
