Wine makes a great gift for so many reasons. One of those reasons is that a good bottle often provides an opportunity to pop the cork and taste together. As we get older, it seems our parents need and want less and less in the material department. What becomes even more precious than stuff is an experience. It is our time. Time spent talking, listening, and sharing stories. Doing so over a nice dinner or good glass of wine is a special gift for many parents and adult kids.
Wine for Father’s Day
I’ve put together a list of few wines I’ve recently tried that seem appropriate for Dads with discerning taste. We tend to think of big reds when it comes to men, but that is definitely not always the case and especially not in these hot summer months. In addition to Fathers Day, these are good in general for Wine Wednesday. The selections cover lots of ground and price points. Billecart Salmon Nicolas François 2008
We begin with a splurge wine. This vintage wine pays homage to Nicolas François who is the founder of the world famous Champagne house. It’s a timeless blend of pinot noir and chardonnay, a cuvée that has been made since 1964
It is a beautiful, complex wine that deserves lingering with over good conversation. It would also be good with food. Aromatic, it has these lovely citrus notes along with orchard fruit. Flavors also include hazlenut along with a pastry quality. Average cost is $249, but dad is worth it.50th Anniversary Cakebread Cellars Chardonnay Collection
This famous Napa winery is turning 50 and to celebrate they have released a special gift set featuring a series of four single vineyard estate Chardonnays, the first varietal ever made by the winery. The labels are different as well. They feature black and white landscape photography from winery founder Jack Cakebread. It’s a pretty special collection and perfect if dad is a white wine or chardonnay fan. $300
VML San Remo Pinot Noir, 2019
The label is so cool. It’s a great conversation piece. And as for the wine, it is also special. It’s the last time the winery is bottling this particular pinot. It is a elegant wine with delicious red Russian River Valley fruit. It really is a nice pinot. It’s also one that benefits from aeration. Let it breathe about an hour before sharing a glass. $6810000 Red Blend
Dad might appreciate the story behind this name. 10,000 hours is based on a theory that it takes 10,000 hours of practice to truly master a skill, no short cuts. In this case it is a wine from Washington State. The grapes come from Red Mountain and this one is a blend of Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Petit Verdot, with a touch of Malbec and Cabernet Franc. It’s both fruity and savory, and should also be decanted before enjoying. $35
Priest Ranch Peacemaker
There is no doubt that if you have siblings, dad played this roll a lot, peacemaker. Perhaps you’ve had some contentious times with dad as well. This wine might be the perfect peace offering. Plus it’s darn good. I just tried a bottle of the 2018 although the 2019 has been released. It’s another red blend but these grapes are grown in Napa. It has lots of red berries, some herbal characteristics and a nice long finish. Drink one and put one in your cellar to age. $90
