Lee County officials gave the green light to a $2.6 million contract with Gulfpoint Construction to rebuild Lakes Regional Park's hurricane-damaged splash pads. The March 18 vote paved the way for the long-awaited project.
The water features at this massive 279-acre park have been closed since Hurricane Ian hit in 2022. The entire renovation of this popular Fort Myers family spot will be covered by federal funds.
More than 100 residents joined forces, signing petitions to get repairs moving faster. The extended shutdown has hurt both park visitors and local businesses.
"We're very, very excited that we're seasonal residents, and our grandchildren love the splash pad when we come down here, and we're happy to see it come back,” said Peter Walcek to WINK News.
Work crews will begin tearing down damaged parts next month. The complete makeover includes new water features, better plumbing, fresh shade structures, and updated safety equipment.
"Ever since we had our two kids, which was about five years ago, it was our favorite thing and the easiest and most fun and most affordable activity in Southwest Florida, honestly, for us," said Erika Milici, local park visitor, to WINK News.
The new splash pad should open by spring 2026.
