Get ready to see lots of red, white and blue today as people put out their flags and anything all-American in honor of Flag Day.
Flag Day, which honors the adoption of our United States flag, is celebrated annually on June 14. The Second Continental Congress is who approved the design of our American flag.
Unfortunately, this stars and stripes holiday often goes unnoticed.
But, the flag is a significant part of our American history. So, keeping the flag properly displayed is highly important.
Here are just a few of the ways to properly display or take care of your American flag, according to the American Legion.
- The flag should be displayed vertically indoors or outdoors and suspended so that its folds fall free as if the flag were staffed. The stripes can be displayed horizontally or vertically against a wall and the union should be up top on the flag's right side.
- The flag can be washed and dried. Just pay attention to the material.
- If your flag isn't made to withstand inclement weather, do not display it when it rains or snows. Bring it inside.
- Only the president or state governor can order the flag to be displayed at half-staff. Half-staffed flags signify a death of a president, former president, Supreme Court justice, prominent military member, etc.
- The flag should only be displayed from sunrise to sunset on buildings and on stationary flagstaffs in the open. However, there is an exception to this rule. The flag can be displayed 24 hours a day if it's properly illuminated at night. The light must be sufficient enough so that the everyday passerby can see it.
