According to the series' original creator Chris Carter, Ryan Coogler will be developing a new spin on The X-Files. Carter mentioned it in an interview about the 30th anniversary of The X-Files.

"I just spoke to a young man, Ryan Coogler, who is going to remount The X-Files with a diverse cast," Carter said per Variety. "So he’s got his work cut out for him, because we covered so much territory."

There is no word on what network or platform on which the reboot would air.  The project is reportedly in its early stages of development. The X-Files originally aired on Fox from 1993-2001. It was later revived on the network for two additional seasons in 2016 and 2018.

In 2021, Coogler signed a five-year deal overall deal with Walt Disney Television. After the deal was announced, the network praised the director on his creativity and vision in film.

"Ryan Coogler is a singular storyteller whose vision and range have made him one of the standout filmmakers of his generation," said Bob Iger, executive chairman of The Walt Disney Company per Variety. "With Black Panther, Ryan brought a groundbreaking story and iconic characters to life in a real, meaningful and memorable way, creating a watershed cultural moment. We’re thrilled to strengthen our relationship and look forward to telling more great stories with Ryan and his team."
