Primate Paradise: Wild Monkeys seen Running Free in Florida
Wild monkeys aren’t something you would expect to see here on an average day in sunny Florida. Sure you may find yourself unexpectedly close to a roaming gator… But wild monkeys? No way, right? Think again. Recently, the people in Groveland, have been buzzing about monkey on the loose!
According to FOX35, Maxel Miranda, a local who stumbled upon this unexpected visitor while picking up his kid from school, thought he was seeing things at first. He said he thought it was a cat at first, but then, after a second glance, he realized it was a monkey! Miranda even whipped out his phone and got footage of the little guy strolling around like he owned the place.
Wild Monkeys Are a Thing Now?
So, what’s the deal with this monkey business? Well, Linda Wasko, a big shot in the primate world, chimed in on FOX 35 to spill the beans. According to her, it’s likely a rhesus macaque, a species that’s no stranger to Central Florida. She thinks they might have hitchhiked from the Wekiva River area, tagging along since way back in the 1930s.
But hold on, because it seems Miranda isn’t the only one who’s seen this furry little dude. There’s been another sighting! And that’s got residents like Miranda and Wasko scratching their heads. Monkeys usually roll deep with their squad, so it’s weird to see one flying solo.
Should You Worry About Wild Moneys?
Now, before you start worrying about wild monkeys swinging from lamp posts, or hanging out in your lanai, you can relax. Wasko wants you to know they’re pretty chill creatures. They’re more into snacking on lizards and frogs than crashing your barbecue. But still, it’s best to keep your distance and give the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission a heads-up if you spot one of these guys.
So, if you’re ever cruising through Groveland and spot something furry out of the corner of your eye, don’t worry ! It’s probably just the local monkey making his rounds around town. Just give him some space and keep your bananas to yourself.
