Mornings With Gina Birch

The biggest celebration of independent movies in Southwest Florida is officially underway. Here is a peak behind the scenes at the Fort Myers Film Festival kickoff.

This is the 14th year for the festival which features and celebrates independent films, their makers and their stars. The five-day event got underway with a fun filled gala last night at the Sidney & Berne Davis Art Center (SBDAC) downtown Fort Myers.

The party began with a VIP reception with some of the actors and producers. It moved to the main gallery of the SBDAC where there was food, cocktails and mingling before the screening. Following the movie, the audience got to hear the story behind the movie and ask questions of the cast in attendance.

Finally, the party moved to the roof for music, dancing and Champagne toast. SBDAC is one of many locations hosting film showings and discussions this week.

Fort Myers Film Festival Kickoff

The opening film was “Hellbent on Boogie” and some of the stars were in attendance. It was shot in Bradenton, Florida in just 14 days. The short time is pretty impressive after view thing movie.

It features a young girl who is on the autism spectrum as she pursues her dream to dance. It is about inclusivity, family, and has lots of layers. The film is funny, touching and will be shown again on Thursday at 1pm. If you get a chance to see it, take it.

Now through Sunday, more than 90 different movies are being shown in several theaters and locations around Fort Myers and on Sanibel. Some are full length, some are shorts. Some are grouped in blocks so you can see several at a time.

Filmmakers, actors, and producers have flown in from around the Unites States and all over the world to participate in the festival.
