The local chapter of the NAACP wants a bust of Confederate General Robert E. Lee removed from a public spot on Monroe Street. Last night, the Fort Myers City Council heard from those in support of the statue, including members of the Daughters of the Confederacy who originally donated the statue. Supporters of removing the statue cite painful reminders of slavery, while those in support of leaving the statue where it is say it should be used for educational purposes.
Two local fishermen discovered human bones in an area off US 41 and Goodlette-Frank Road near the Gordon River in Naples yesterday afternoon. Police believe it’s the remains of one person and they believe the body may have been there for quite a while. They’re continuing their investigation.
Frederick Green of Immokalee now faces up to 35 years in prison after being found guilty yesterday for cocaine trafficking and possession of marijuana. Police say he was part of a Collier County drug trafficking organization. He’ll be sentenced later this month.
Police have identified the man who was arrested near the site of Sunday mornings fire at World Compass Moving and Delivery in Fort Myers. 22 year old James Rigsby has been charged with loitering, prowling and obstruction. Police are continuing to investigate.
