Police continue to investigate a shooting in Fort Myers Shores in which a man was killed yesterday morning.  The shooting took place near the intersection of Tropic Avenue and First Street off Palm Beach Boulevard. The victim has been identified as 51 year old Ronald Martin.

Timothy Rice, a wanted sexual predator from Northport, has turned himself into police. Rice had been arrested last month after parents complained that he touched their daughters inappropraitely at a Charlotte County pool. After investigating, police found previous incidents involving Rice, including the warrant out of Northport.

 

20 year old Samantha King of Northport was arrested yesterday, charged with DUI in connection with a crash that caused two deaths following the Atlanta Braves first exhibition game at their new stadium. She’s charged with causing a chain reaction crash and is facing five counts of DUI with property damage and two counts of DUI manslaughter.

 

Funeral services will be held today for Layla Aiken, the 8 year old from Cape Coral killed by a hit and run driver while waiting at her bus stop.  The service will be at the Gallaher Funeral Home,  on Cleveland Avenue, across from Lee Memorial Hospital from 3-7pm…and is open to the public.

 

Measles Count Higher in US This Year Than All of 2018 Combined

  • As states discuss changing their vaccine policies to prevent different infection outbreaks, the CDC has announced that the total number of measles cases for only the first three months of this year is 387, surpassing the entire year of 2018, which reported 372 cases.
  • 15 states have reported measles outbreaks.  Experts have said that international travel to and from places with high outbreak numbers, like Israel and the Ukraine, have caused the spike in outbreak numbers.  The majority of people who contracted measles were unvaccinated.

 

Chick-fil-A loses two airport deals in less than two weeks

  • Chick-fil-A is losing business over their perceived anti LGBTQ views.
  • The fast food chain was close to sealing a deal at Buffalo Niagara Airport and San Antonio International Airport but lawmakers felt the company needs more inclusion.
  • Chick-fil-A has been criticized for making donations to anti LGBTQ groups and the CEO has spoken openly about opposing gay marriage.
  • In a statement, Chick-fil-A says they don’t have a political or social agenda and want to bring delicious food to everyone.

 

Beachgoers are Smoking Less, Having More Sex

  • While fewer beachgoers are smoking cigarettes, more of them are having sex — but safely.
  • Those are just a few of the findings released by Clean Ocean Action, a group that performs an annual cleanup of New Jersey’s coastline. On Tuesday, COA released a rundown of the 454,365 items recovered from Jersey’s sandy shores in 2018. Workers picked up about 22,000 cigarette butts, less than a quarter of those found the previous year, while the 565 condoms they found represented an increase of 56 percent. The bad news is 82 percent of the trash collected was plastic, which can be harmful or fatal to marine life. Other discarded items included counterfeit money, a restroom door, a sex toy, a plastic pig and loads of dirty diapers.
  • “The Beach Sweeps provides proof we humans can be a wasteful, sloppy, and pretty gross bunch,” says executive director Cindy Zipf. “Who leaves diapers on the beach? It’s bad enough that litter makes our beaches look terrible, but it also kills and maims marine life.”

 

Your Netflix Bill Is About to Get Bigger

  • If you’re sharing a network password with a friend you may want to let them know that your bill is about to get bigger.
  • Netflix sent emails to its subscribers letting them know that their plans would be increased by $2. The streaming service budgeted for $8 billion for new content on its platform in 2018.
  • Netflix invested wisely because the streaming service took home a lot of awards during this year’s award season, including 23 Emmys for “The Crown”, “Stranger Things,” and “GLOW,” tieing with the reigning champ of award season, HBO.
