“The View” Plans To Celebrate Barbara Walters
“The View” Plans To Celebrate Barbara Walters when the show returns from its holiday break today (12/03) at 11am. Walters was the show’s founder. She died December 30th at the age of 93. When she retired from the show in 2014, women in news from all over the country showed up to pay tribute. So today’s show is expected to be extra special.
Walters is credited with breaking barriers for women in the news business. In 1976 she became the first female anchor on an evening news program. That was at ABC News with Harry Reasoner who was not always kind to his new colleague. She was also a co-host of “20/20.” Her last big project came in 1997 when she launched “The View” which, of course, is still on today.
Barbara Walters style
Walters was known for asking uncomfortable and sometimes shocking questions of those she interviewed. Viewers often gasped but kept coming back for more. Her specials generated great ratings. She once asked Monica Lewenski what she was thinking showing her thong to the President of the United States.
Comedians took great fodder with that interview style. Gilda Radner famously spoofed Walters on “Saturday Night Live.” So did Cheri Oteri. Here is a classic video with Radner.
“The View” plans to celebrate Barbara Walters and it is sure to be a great show.
