Toasting National Pinot Grigio Day In Florida
Thanks to Giesen Wine for inviting me to try their wine. They provided a free bottle in exchange for an honest and unbiased review.
You see this wine on almost every wine list in Southwest Florida by the glass and the bottle. It is so beloved both nationally and internationally, that it has its own day for celebrating. Today we are toasting National Pinot Grigio Day in Florida along with a new Fabulous Find.
Today, (May 17) is also International Pinot Gris Day. So what is the difference between pinot gris and grigio? Nothing really. They are the same grape.
Gris refers to the grayish color of this particular grape which is a mutation of Pinot Noir. By the way, the “s” in Gris is silent. It’s pronounced “gree”.
Like any wine, the difference comes from the place the grapes are grown and how the winemaker treats them. But generally speaking, Pinot Grigio and Gris are known to be fresh with flavors of citrus, stone fruits and apples depending on the ripeness of the grapes.
These wines are mostly dry and can also be floral. Some wine aficionados brush these off as light and simple. However, if you try one from the Alto Adige region of Italy, you might just have a whole new appreciation for Pinot Grigio.
The area is in Northern Italy bordering Austria and Switzerland. The names of the wines sometimes seem more Austrian than Italian and can be confusing. But they are so good. Take a chance on them.
Meanwhile, across the globe in New Zealand, you’ll find pinot gris that is fresh and full of the classic fruit flavors. In addition, there are the occasional notes of honeysuckle and spice.

I recently shared a bottle of Giesen Pinot Gris catching up with some friends over a cheese board. It was a fantastic way to enjoy an afternoon. The wine had nice texture, lots of peach and a juicy finish. It was a nice accompaniment to the salty cheeses.
The wine is also gluten free. If you are looking for low and no alcohol wine Giesen has an entire line of those too. It includes a pinot grigio. This brand is one of my new Fabulous Finds.
Another New Zealand Pinot Gris I’m partial to is The Ned. It has an unusual pinkish/orange tint. The color is a result of the winemaker leaving the skins on the grapes a little longer during fermentation.
Pinot Grigio and Gris are great wines to keep on hand going into the summer. They are good with salads, seafood and especially sipping by the pool. Raise a glass to National Pinot Grigio Day in Florida.
