Governor Ron DeSantis presented his State of the State Address yesterday afternoon calling for lower taxes, safer schools and more effective environmental protections.  DeSantis says Florida has repositioned it’s water policy  by expediting key projects like the EAA reservoir and raising the Tamiami Trail, establishing a blue-green algae task force to develop policies to fight algae blooms, fight red tide and improve water quality; and by appointing a Chief Science Officer to better harness scientific data and research.

A Cape Coral man is under arrest, accused of using a CVS Photo Lab to process child pornography. William Burkey is facing several charges including possession of obscene material of a minor.

 

A traffic stop in Cape Coral led to a drug arrest. 25 year old Ashley Lynn Shirley, a passenger in the car was recorded on police dash cam disposing of a pencil case containing methamphetamine, heroin and drug paraphernalia. The driver of the car fled. Police are still looking for him.

 

Charlotte County Deputies also made a drug arrest after helping a motorist with a disabled vehicle. While a deputy was assisting, he smelled marijuana and conducted a search of the vehicle and discovered various pills and MDMA.  Several small baggies also contained cocaine and other drugs. Bernardo Baptist is facing nine counts of Possession of a Controlled Substance, Possession of Cocaine, Possession of Marijuana, and Possession of Drug Paraphernalia.

U.S. Drug, Alcohol and Suicide Deaths At All-Time High

  • According to a report published this week by the Trust for America’s Health and the Well Being Trust, American drug, alcohol and suicide deaths have doubled since 1999, with more than 150,000 people dying from all three factors in 2017 alone.
  • The age range most affected by the deaths were persons aged 35-54, with 72.4 deaths per 100,000 people.  Men fared far worse than women, with 68.2 deaths per 100.000 compared to 25.7 female deaths.
  • West Virginia saw the most deaths for any state, with 91 WV residents dying per every 100,000.
  • Suicide rates have increased by 22% in the last decade, with proportionally higher deaths amongst Blacks and Latinos.  White males in rural areas still account for the majority of suicides.
  • Synthetic-opioid deaths have increased 10-fold over the last five years.  There was a 45% increase between 2016 and 2017.

 

This Is America’s Richest Zip Code — And It’s Not in New York or California

  • You may think New York and California would have some of the richest areas in the United States but that’s not the case, Florida takes the top honors with a small island by the name of Fisher Island, 33109, according to Bloomberg.
  • The 216-acre island is home to Miami Beach’s wealthiest residents who have an annual income of $2.2 million.
  • You can only get to the island by boat or ferry and has some of the best amenities in the state. This will be the second year that Fisher Island tops the list for America’s richest zip code.
  • 33109 beat out Palm Beach, Florida and New York’s Tribeca neighborhood. Fisher Island has a massive foot spa, observatory, golf course and a private beach with butler service.

‘School of Rock’ Kid Guitarist Facing Four Felonies over Stolen Guitars

  • Joey Gaydos, Jr., who played kid guitarist Zack Attack in the film School of Rock, is currently facing felony charges for stealing guitar equipment.
  • Gaydos was busted by authorities four different times in just over a month for allegedly stealing guitars and an amp, according to TMZ.
  • Authorities say Gaydos would ask to look at a guitar while in a music shop and then would walk out of the store with the guitar and sell it in a pawn shop to fuel a suspected drug habit.  Gaydos seems to have some good taste in guitars; he made off with an Epiphone Les Paul Prophecy, a Fender Stratocaster and a Gibson Les Paul gold top.  Gaydos now faces charges of theft and larceny.

 

 

Harley-Davidson Will Sell Electric Motorcycles for Kids

  • A 3-year-old riding a Harley? Sweet!
  • Harley-Davidson has acquired StaCyc. The company makes battery-powered balance bikes for kids as young as 3.
  • The bikes reach top speeds of 9 to 11 miles per hour and have a battery that will last about an hour.
  • Harley-Davidson will add their branding to the bikes and sell them at their dealers. They are currently priced around $650.
