The NBC2 First Alert Storm Team is issuing a HEAT ALERT for this weekend in anticipation of near-record highs as temperatures for parts of SWFL, especially inland, push the upper 90s. We’ll have a complete look at the forecast coming up with NBC-2’s Rob Duns.

 

Charlotte County Deputies are searching fro two suspects who may be traveling in a silver SUV. They believe these two men are responsible for a strong arm robbery in a Port Charlotte home. Police say the men ripped jewelry right off the neck of a homeowner during the robbery. Call the Charlotte County Sheriff’s Office if you have any information.
The Gateway 7-11 has once again been victimized by a credit card skimmer. A device was found yesterday on a pump at that 7-11, less than a week after four more skimmers were found at that store. The Lee County Commission has approved an anti-skimmer ordinance.

Kristen Wiig Not Filming in Georgia Over Abortion Law

Because of the newly passed abortion laws in the state of Georgia Kristen Wiig’s latest movie and an Amazon series won’t film in the state.

  • Lionsgate made the announcement that Wiig’s upcoming comedy Bob and Star Go TO Visit Del Mar, will not film in Georgia.
  • These shows join other companies that are pulling out of the state over the “fetal heartbeat bill” that was made law by Governor Brian Kemp last month.
  • The bill prohibits abortion after a heartbeat is detected in an embryo which is usually between five and six weeks of a woman being pregnant.

 

Homeless teen earns $3M in scholarships

  • A homeless Tennessee teen has been awarded more than $3 million in scholarship and been accepted into more than 40 colleges.
  • BBC reports Tupac Mosley became homeless when his dad died about two years ago. The Memphis 17-year-old at one point sleeping on motel floors. His family going through further financial troubles.
  • But Mosely just kept swimming, moving forward. He credits his support system of friends, family, teachers, principal and counselors. A local non-profit and campsite, For the Kingdom, put the family up so they could save up some money.
  • So, where will Mosely’s next chapter begin? Tennessee State University. The incoming freshman will study electrical engineering.

 

Microwave Hacks To Make You A Better Cook

  • You really should look at your microwave as a kitchen tool rather than just something you use to heat up leftovers and TV dinners. It’s capable of doing much more. Here are a few hacks that will turn you into a cuisine superstar in no time.
  • Toss some cloves of garlic into the microwave and the skins will peel right off in under 15 seconds. Same goes for citrus fruits. Ten seconds will help them release far more juice.
  • Don’t throw out that rock hard brown sugar. Wrap the clumps in a moist paper towel and nuke for 25 seconds. Stale bread will also be a thing of the past with the same trick.
  • Forget waiting for your dough to rise. Chef Mic will do the work in a few easy steps.

 

Stay Out of the Pool Until You Read This

  • As public pool season arrives, so does new information that’s likely to put a whole new spin on getting splashed in the face or accidentally swallowing water: Public pools contain one to three ounces of urine for each person that uses them.
  • While health expert Dr. Anessa Alappatt says the same holds true for any swimming pool, public pools contain greater amounts of pee because a lot of people use them over the course of a day. In fact, the strong chlorine smell that most people associate with public pools isn’t what they think it is, she says. “The odor that you smell in a public pool is not the chlorine, but it’s the chlorine reacting with all the urine in the pool,” Alappatt says.
  • In an unrelated survey, 40 percent of adults admitted to urinating in public pools regularly. While the pee-to-water ratio by the end of a summer would likely be staggering, it should be noted that chlorine kills most bacteria from urine within moments.
