Great White Shark Pings Off Cape Coral Coast
We’ve been hearing a lot about the great white shark migration and now one has pinged off the coast of Cape Coral.
One of my favorite websites is OCEARCH, that tracks sharks and turtles. Not only on the site can you see what’s near us in Southwest Florida, but anywhere around the world. It’s so fascinating to me, especially when you see how they move over time. Much like human snowbirds, sharks too are in search of warmer temperatures and swim south. But it’s not very often we see a shark like a great white in the waters of Cape Coral.
Great White Shark Pings Off Cape Coral Coast
At the end of 2023 there were some pretty large sharks that pinged, but not this far south. There were two great whites, one in Jacksonville and another in Daytona Beach. And near St. Augustine, a 1400+ pound great white. But here in the Gulf waters, we see bull sharks often, but not great whites. Until now.
Rose, a 10 1/2 foot great white pinged off the coast of Cape Coral earlier this week. Now, it wasn’t very close, so there’s no need to sound the alarm. However it’s such a rare sight, it’s pretty cool. She’s a girl on the move. She’s been tracked for many years now and since 2020 has traveled over 15,000 miles. Last month, she was pinged off the Treasure Coast and Boynton Beach. And Sunday was tracked in Cape Coral. As of today, March 6, she’s traveled north and west of Sarasota.
Great White sharks aren’t much of a threat to us here in Fort Myers or Naples, but it’s always good to remember when taking a dip in the Gulf, that it’s their home, not ours.
