Plane Crazy: My Gator Circle Neighborhood Wakes Up to Emergency Landing
Saturday morning in my Cape Coral neighborhood was pretty wild. Well, let’s just say it kicked off with a bang… Well, more like a plane landing.
My Saturday started off normal enough. I was still in my pajamas, when I hear commotion from my neighbors outside. At first, I think they saw a Gator or maybe another neighbor sunbathing, again. But not this time. No, they seem to be freaking out about a single-engine plane making it’s descent a few streets over.
Now, I’ve seen my fair share of crazy stuff in this neighborhood. Car wrecks? Check. Gators? Yup. Elderly Sunbathing neighbors? Unfortunately… You betcha. But planes falling out of the sky? That’s a new one, even for the wild streets of Gator Circle.
According to NBC2, The Cape Coral Fire Department, swiftly responded to the scene. As did me and a few other neighbors. Turns out, a little Bellanca 17-30A had taken off from Pine Shadows Airfield in North Fort Myers, but it didn’t quite make it to its destination. Emergency landing it was, right here in my neck of the woods.
Thankfully, there was only one soul aboard, and they walked away without a scratch. Miraculously, no power lines were taken out, and no cars were crushed. It was a close call. I almost had to tell my pre-teen daughter that the internet was taken out by an airplane. We dodged a bullet. This time.
This is real life in Gator Circle. There I was, smack dab in the middle of all this craziness. Flashing lights from police cars, firefighters doing their thing, and me just standing there, thinking, “Is this really happening?”
I mean, I wasn’t even awake yet. When suddenly, Wham! Breaking news. And I’m not exactly cut out for this reporter gig. But there I was, snapping pictures like bootleg Jimmy Olsen straight outta Superman comics. Breaking news? No thanks. If the sky is falling, I’d much rather be at home with the alligators and sunbathers. You know, where it’s safe.
