North Fort Myers Shell Factory Closes, Selling Off 86 Years of Memories
After almost 90 years in business, the Shell Factory in North Fort Myers closed its doors this September. Two online auctions will now find new homes for its massive collection of unique items. Buyers can bid on all sorts of items — from old postcards to beach accessories. The Christmas items are particularly special, including a huge 7-foot Santa and religious scenes.
The facility’s animals – more than 350 in total – have found new homes. While many stayed in the Gulf Coast area, others moved as far as Michigan and Alabama. For Pam Cronin, who ran the place for 27 years, closing up permanently was heartbreaking. Yet she remains optimistic that each item will find a good home.
The first auction of 500 store items wraps up December 10 at 7 p.m. through ShellFactoryAuction.com. A second auction is coming in January 2025, featuring the building’s equipment, fixtures, and memorabilia. Interested in bidding? You’ll need to register online first. Just note that no in-person viewing is available, and all sales are final.
