Amy Schumer Has Cushing’s Syndrome
Following Amy Schumer’s addressing the “cruel and misogynist” comments about her puffier face recently, the comedian now reveals she has a rare hormonal disorder. Over the weekend, Schumer, 42, revealed her diagnosis of Cushing’s syndrome in an interview with News Not Noise. Schumer admitted that the online buzz around her appearance was how she “realized something was wrong.” Earlier this month, Schumer’s appearances on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon and The View garnered comments about her noticeably puffier face. She took to Instagram to address all the commentary and wrote in a very long caption: “Thank you so much for everyone’s input about my face! I’ve enjoyed feedback and deliberation about my appearance as all women do for almost 20 years.”

Cushing’s syndrome is caused by excessive levels of cortisol, known as the stress hormone, and can cause a range of symptoms, including a round face, weight gain, and weak muscles, according to the National Institutes of Health. In the new interview, Schumer said she had been undergoing medical tests while also doing a round of interviews to promote the new season of her Hulu show, Life and Beth. She told News Not Noise that she was “in M.R.I. machines four hours at a time, having my veins shut down from the amount of blood drawn and thinking I may not be around to see my son grow up.” In Schumer’s case, the excess cortisol she has that led to her diagnosis was brought on by “getting steroid injections in high doses.”
As we previously reported, Schumer revealed she had endometriosis in 2021. To help treat that incurable condition, steroids could be used. However, it is unclear if that was why Schumer was getting steroid injections. Predictably, people were cruel towards her on social media. One person on X (formerly Twitter) stated about her comments: “Weird that a comedian is crying about insults. I guess she was never a comedian.” Another person commented, “She’s just downright awful at everything.” A third asked, “do people hear themselves when they speak?” Wrote another, “i want Amy Schumer to stop thinking that our issues have to do with her face because that may be where her insecurities lie but there is actually nothing uglier about her than her spirit.”
