Stephen Colbert Apologizes About Kate Middleton Jokes
Stephen Colbert apologizes for the jokes he made about Kate Middleton, which caused an uproar from people following the news of the Princess of Wales’ cancer diagnosis. The Late Show host previously joked in an earlier episode this month if Middleton had gone missing because her husband, Prince William, was having an affair.
On the March 12 episode, Colbert, 59, said Rose Hanbury is the woman the future king of England was cheating with, rumors of which first started in 2019. “According to tabloids back then, when Kate supposedly confronted him about it, he laughed it off, saying there was nothing to it,” Colbert said. “Always a good response when your wife accuses you of cheating.”
Per Vanity Fair, Hanbury denied the affair rumors, and her legal representatives wrote the following statement: “The rumor appears to have entered into the mainstream media recently as a result of another joke made about it on The Late Show With Stephen Colbert. We have written on our client’s behalf to CBS and various other reputable media organizations to confirm that the allegation is false.”
This week, Colbert acknowledged that his skit about Middleton was in bad taste following her cancer announcement. The mother of three opened up about her successful January abdominal surgery to remove cancer and how she is currently in the early treatments of chemotherapy since there was more to be removed. After giving the explanation as to why she has been out of the public eye, Middleton asked for privacy for her and her family as she completes her treatment.
On Monday’s (March 25) episode, Colbert solemnly stated that despite the offensive nature of his jokes most times, “There’s a standard that I try to hold myself to, and that is I do not make light of somebody else’s tragedy.” Adding that it is not known whether her prognosis is “a tragic one,” the late-show host adds that despite the top-notch care he’s sure she’s getting, “any cancer diagnosis of any kind is harrowing for the patient and for their family.” He then offered “well wishes and heartfelt hope that her recovery is swift and thorough.”
Apologies For Kate
Various co-hosts of The View also expressed regret over their Middleton conspiracy theories following the princess’ Friday announcement. Blake Lively was one of many celebrities who made fun of Middleton’s Photoshop mishap. The Gossip Girl alum ended up posting an apology and well-wishes on her Instagram Story about her “silly post” about Photoshop fails and feels “mortified.”
Kim Kardashian captioned one of her outfit pics: “On my way to go find Kate.” Fans flooded the comments after Middleton’s announcement, calling for Kim to take down the post and apologize. One person wrote: “On my way to go find Kim’s apology.” Another stated: “I think an apology is needed !” A third commented, “Didn’t age well. You never know what someone is battling ..” And on social media, people were even more brutal with the wild rumors, with a popular one being that Middleton got BBL surgery.
